Here are 6 signs it's time, from age over 10 years to repeated repairs, rising bills and a yellow flame. The main signs you should get a new boiler are: it is over 10 years old, repairs are frequent or costly, bills are rising, parts are hard to find, the heating is unreliable or noisy, or the flame is yellow or orange. Not every boiler problem means you need a new one. Many faults can be repaired. But some signs point to replacement being the smarter choice. ## 1. Your boiler is over 10 years old Most boilers last 10 to 15 years. After that, parts wear out and breakdowns get more likely. Older boilers also waste more gas. Many run at around 60 to 70% efficiency. A new boiler is 90% or better. ## 2. You keep paying for repairs One repair is normal. Repeated call-outs are not. Watch for pressure loss, cutting out, fault codes or failing parts such as pumps, valves and control boards. A simple rule: if a repair costs around half the price of a new boiler, and yours is over 10 years old, replacing it usually makes more sense. ## 3. Your bills are going up If you use the same heating but pay more for gas, your boiler may be losing efficiency. Bills can rise for other reasons, so don't replace a boiler on cost alone. Use it as one clue. ## 4. Parts are hard to find Very old boilers can be hard to fix once makers stop supplying parts. That means longer waits and higher repair bills. If your engineer struggles to source parts, replacement is often the more reliable choice. ## 5. Your heating or hot water is unreliable, or the boiler is noisy Slow-to-heat rooms, hot water that cuts out, banging, kettling or whistling are all warning signs. Causes include limescale, trapped air, a failing pump or problems elsewhere in the system. These are not always a boiler fault. But if the boiler is old and the problems keep coming back, it may be time to upgrade. ## 6. The flame is yellow or orange A healthy gas flame is blue. A yellow or orange flame can mean incomplete burning, which can produce carbon monoxide (CO). This is a safety issue at any age. - Turn the boiler off and do not use it. - Watch for headaches, dizziness, nausea or tiredness. If anyone feels unwell, open the windows, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999. It is free and open 24 hours. - Fit a CO alarm if you do not have one. - Never try to fix a gas appliance yourself. Only a Gas Safe registered engineer should do gas work. ## Repair or replace?
