Boiler brands, fault codes, and what they mean for South London homeowners

Most boiler breakdowns display a fault code on the control panel — a letter and number combination that points to the part or system causing the shutdown. The problem is that every manufacturer uses a different code system, and what looks urgent on one boiler can be a simple fix on another.

This guide covers nine boiler brands found in South London homes, ranked by engineer recommendation. Full fault code guides with repair costs are available for Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Viessmann, Ideal, and Baxi — the five most common brands in the area. Guides for Glow-worm, Alpha, Ferroli, and Potterton are in progress; contact Reion directly for fault diagnosis on any brand.

One local note: South London sits in one of the UK's hardest water zones. Limescale from Thames Water accelerates wear on heat exchangers, which is the root cause of many of the overheating and pressure fault codes listed below. It is worth factoring this in when choosing a brand and whether to fit a scale reducer or magnetic filter.

What to do when a fault code appears

1

Note the exact code

Write down the code shown on the display — including any sub-codes or flashing sequences. Different codes on the same boiler can look similar but point to completely different faults.

2

Check pressure first

Many fault codes — particularly F22 on Vaillant and E119 on Baxi — are caused by low system pressure. Check the gauge on the boiler front. If it reads below 1 bar, use the filling loop to repressurise to 1.2–1.5 bar and attempt a reset.

3

Reset once

Most boilers have a reset button on the front panel. Hold it for 3–5 seconds. If the boiler fires and the code clears, monitor it for 24 hours. If the code returns, do not reset again — call a Gas Safe engineer.

4

Call a Gas Safe engineer if the code persists

Repeated fault codes — especially ignition faults (EA, F28, E168), overheating (E9, F75), or gas valve faults (F62) — require professional diagnosis. These involve components that are dangerous to work on without Gas Safe registration.

If you smell gas at any point, do not attempt to reset the boiler. Leave the property, call National Gas Emergency on 0800 111 999, and do not return until the supply has been made safe. Then call a Gas Safe engineer for repair.

Boiler brands and fault codes — common questions

Which boiler brand is most reliable in the UK?
Worcester Bosch consistently tops independent reliability surveys and is the most recommended brand by Gas Safe engineers in the UK. Vaillant is a close second for build quality. That said, reliability depends as much on the installation quality and annual servicing as it does on the brand — a well-maintained Ideal will outlast a neglected Worcester Bosch.
What do boiler fault codes mean?
Fault codes are error messages displayed on your boiler's control panel when the system detects a problem and shuts down for safety. Each manufacturer uses its own code system — an F28 on a Vaillant means something different to an E9 on a Worcester Bosch. This guide covers the most common codes for each brand, what they indicate, and whether you can safely reset or whether you need a Gas Safe engineer.
Can I fix a boiler fault code myself?
Some faults are safe to check yourself — low pressure (usually a filling loop job), a blocked condensate pipe in winter, or a simple reset after a one-off shutdown. However, faults involving gas supply, ignition, heat exchangers, or the PCB must be diagnosed and repaired by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Never repeatedly reset a boiler showing the same fault code without professional investigation.
How much does a boiler fault code repair cost?
It depends on the fault. A pressure issue or condensate blockage might cost £80–£120 (covered by the diagnostic fee with no additional parts). A pump replacement runs £200–£350, a heat exchanger £250–£500, a PCB £200–£400. Reion provides a fixed quote after the diagnostic visit — no obligation to proceed.
Which boiler brands does R.W. Miller install?
Reion's primary recommendations for new installations are Worcester Bosch and Vaillant — both offer strong manufacturer warranties and best-in-class reliability. Ideal and Baxi are available for budget-conscious installs. For premium specifications, Viessmann is available. Glow-worm, Alpha, Ferroli, and Potterton are not fitted as new installs but Reion carries out repairs and diagnostics on all of them.
How long should a boiler last?
A well-maintained boiler should last 12–15 years. Worcester Bosch and Vaillant tend to hit the upper end of that range. Baxi and Ideal are typically reliable for 10–12 years. The biggest factors are annual servicing, water quality (hard water areas like Wimbledon and South London accelerate wear on heat exchangers), and whether a magnetic filter is fitted to catch system sludge.
Why do boilers in South London develop faults faster?
South London is in one of the UK's hardest water zones. Thames Water supplies water with high calcium concentrations that deposits as limescale inside heat exchangers over time. This causes kettling, overheating faults (E9, F75), and eventually heat exchanger failure. Fitting a magnetic filter and descaling inhibitor on installation significantly extends boiler life in SW postcodes.
